As the 2026 MLB season approaches, the Cleveland Guardians are in the thick of finalizing their 26-man roster. With some decisions made due to performance and injuries, a few key spots remain undecided.
With only four spring training games left, the Guardians may lean on roster rules and player development strategies to shape their final lineup. As the March 26 opener against the Seattle Mariners nears, Cleveland seems poised to make informed choices.
The Guardians are juggling three major roster decisions: one concerning the outfield and two involving the pitching staff.
George Valera’s unfortunate calf strain has left a gap in the outfield. Valera was expected to secure a starting role, especially after Nolan Jones was sent to Triple-A following a tough spring. This opens the door for CJ Kayfus, who might see more time as a designated hitter, or Stuart Fairchild, a seasoned backup capable of covering all outfield positions.
On the pitching front, the Guardians took a hit with top setup reliever Hunter Gaddis sidelined due to forearm tightness. With Peyton Pallette, a Rule 5 Draft pick, impressing this spring, the final bullpen spot could go to Colin Holderman, Kolby Allard, or Codi Heuer. The decision may hinge on 40-man roster logistics.
Lastly, the battle for the fifth starter spot in the rotation is heating up. Joey Cantillo, out of options and needing to clear waivers to be sent down, leaves Logan Allen and Parker Messick in contention. Messick, a rookie, has outperformed Allen this spring, though Allen brings the experience of 29 starts from last season.
While these decisions might not define the Guardians' season, they are crucial for setting a strong early tone. The team is keen on starting the season with momentum, and these roster choices will play a pivotal role in that effort.
