The Cleveland Guardians are in the midst of fine-tuning their roster as spring training progresses, making some key moves on Sunday to bring clarity to their lineup ahead of the regular season.
Outfielder Johnathan Rodríguez has been optioned to Triple-A Columbus. The 26-year-old had a stint with Cleveland in 2025, but his .197 average over 71 at-bats showed he needed more time to hone his skills. This move gives Rodríguez a chance to develop further, serving as a crucial depth piece in the outfield for the organization.
Joining him in the minors are Kody Huff, Cooper Ingle, and Dayan Frías, all of whom were in major league camp as non-roster invitees. Huff, a catcher who started with the Tampa Bay Rays, has been part of Cleveland’s system since last season, showing promise with the Columbus Clippers. Ingle, a fourth-round pick from Clemson in 2023, is climbing the ranks as a catching prospect, steadily making his mark in the farm system.
Frías, an infielder from Colombia, has been with the Guardians since 2018. Known for his defensive versatility, he has showcased his ability to play multiple infield positions, adding valuable flexibility to the team’s future plans.
These roster adjustments are typical during spring training as teams work to solidify their Opening Day rosters. By sending players to minor league camp or Triple-A, the Guardians are ensuring their younger talent continues to get essential at-bats and defensive practice while the major league lineup is finalized.
With these changes, Cleveland’s spring training roster is now trimmed to 44 players. Expect more decisions in the coming weeks as the Guardians shape their squad for the upcoming season.
