Cleveland Guardians Shake Up Roster Involving Notable Prospect

Guardians adjust roster strategy ahead of Opening Day, spotlighting prospect Juan Brito's potential and veteran Trevor Stephan's comeback journey.

As the Cleveland Guardians gear up for Opening Day, they're making strategic roster adjustments, focusing on both emerging talent and seasoned players. Thursday's moves highlighted these priorities, involving a promising prospect and a veteran pitcher.

Juan Brito Heads to Triple-A

The Guardians have opted to start Juan Brito in Triple-A Columbus for the 2026 season. Brito, a switch-hitter, showed potential during Spring Training, appearing in 13 games with 26 at-bats.

Despite a .154/.313/.269 slash line, Brito’s keen eye at the plate is well-documented from his Minor League performances. However, his 11 strikeouts in Cactus League play suggest room for improvement.

Cleveland now faces the challenge of finding Brito's best fit at Triple-A. While primarily a second baseman, Brito’s versatility extends to first base and right field.

Despite beginning in the Minors, Brito's MLB debut seems likely this year, bolstered by his career Minor League OPS of .831. The Guardians are undoubtedly eager to see how his skills translate to the major leagues, though that chapter will start a bit later.

Trevor Stephan Reassigned

Trevor Stephan, once a key setup man for Cleveland, continues his journey back from Tommy John surgery. After being outrighted to Columbus following a DFA in August, Stephan was in the Guardians' big-league camp but has now been reassigned to Minor League camp.

In Cactus League action, Stephan pitched 3.1 innings, allowing one earned run and three hits, while striking out five. His performance indicates progress, yet there's more work ahead as he aims to reclaim his form and make an impact on the mound once again.

These moves reflect the Guardians' strategic planning as they fine-tune their roster, balancing immediate needs with long-term potential.
