Cleveland Guardians Plan Intriguing Role for Chase DeLauter This Season

Guardians' top prospect Chase DeLauter may find himself in right field, as the team strategizes to utilize his powerful arm and promising offensive potential for the upcoming season.

Cleveland Guardians fans have plenty to be excited about with top outfield prospect Chase DeLauter making waves in Spring Training. Despite limited appearances so far, DeLauter has already showcased his potential with two hits in three plate appearances, reminding everyone of his prowess on the field.

Though DeLauter has yet to make his regular season debut in the majors, he did get a taste of postseason action last year, stepping up to the plate seven times and securing a hit and a walk. Injuries have been a hurdle, but when he's healthy, DeLauter is a game-changer and a key piece of the Guardians’ future lineup.

As Spring Training unfolds, DeLauter is in a prime position to earn a spot on the Opening Day roster. While the organization hasn't officially outlined his immediate future, team insider Terry Pluto provides some insight into their plans.

“The Guardians aren’t saying it, but they consider rookie Chase DeLauter a classic right fielder. He has a terrific arm.

At James Madison, he sometimes pitched in relief and threw 92 mph. DeLauter played center and right in the minors,” Pluto noted.

With a strong and accurate arm, DeLauter seems destined for right field, where his skills can be maximized, especially given the frequency of plays at third base compared to left field.

The Guardians are experimenting with Steven Kwan in center field, which could lead to an outfield trio featuring Kwan, DeLauter, and George Valera in left. Angel Martinez and Johnathan Rodriguez are also in the mix, and DeLauter has the versatility to cover center if needed.

For the Guardians, preserving DeLauter's health is crucial, and positioning him in a corner outfield spot might be the best strategy long-term. However, his performance at the plate will ultimately dictate his role. If DeLauter can consistently hit major league pitching, especially handling left-handed pitchers, manager Stephen Vogt will undoubtedly find a spot for him in the lineup.
