The Cleveland Guardians are offering fans a tantalizing glimpse of their future with a lineup of promising young hitters in spring training. Leading the charge are prospects Chase DeLauter and Travis Bazzana, who could make an impact as soon as Opening Day. But keep an eye on Ralphy Velazquez, a potential star who, despite possibly being a year away from the majors, is already turning heads.
Velazquez made a statement in his spring training debut against the Athletics, showcasing his skills with an impressive performance. The 20-year-old first baseman reached base in all three of his plate appearances, going 2-for-2 with a run scored and two RBIs, including a sharp opposite-field hit in the third inning.
Starting with a walk in the second inning, Velazquez followed up with a leadoff single in the sixth, eventually scoring on a groundout. He was later replaced by Carter Kieboom in what ended as a 6-0 victory for the Guardians, marking their third straight win in the Cactus League.
The competition for a major league debut is fierce, especially with the recent signing of veteran Rhys Hoskins, who adds depth to an already crowded first base position. Hoskins is expected to share duties with Kyle Manzardo and C.J. Kayfus, who started in split-squad games against the Reds and Brewers.
Despite the challenges, Velazquez's future with the Guardians looks bright. Ranked as the No. 9 prospect by MLB.com at the end of last season, he boasts a .994 OPS in 28 games following a promotion to Double-A. With 35 home runs and 154 RBIs in just over two minor league seasons, Velazquez’s power and presence at 6-foot-3, 240 pounds make him a formidable figure.
Fans can look forward to his first spring training home run, a milestone that will surely be remembered as he continues his journey toward making an impact in Cleveland.
