Chase DeLauter has burst onto the scene with the Cleveland Guardians, turning heads with a start to his rookie season that's nothing short of historic. Once pegged as a promising prospect, DeLauter is now raising eyebrows and expectations, hinting at a future that could include All-Star appearances and perhaps even MVP chatter.
While it's way too early to talk Hall of Fame, DeLauter’s early performance certainly gives fans something to dream about. He credits his big left-handed swing to none other than Bryce Harper, the Philadelphia Phillies star who has been a source of inspiration since DeLauter was a young player.
“I tried to match what Bryce Harper did a lot growing up, just watching YouTube videos. Kind of just try to mimic his swing. I know mine probably does not look anything like his or a bunch of other guys in the big leagues, but I would watch YouTube videos of him and try to make the exact same swing in the backyard,” DeLauter shared.
DeLauter's journey to the majors wasn't as swift as Harper's, who made a splash with the Washington Nationals at just 19. Harper quickly made his mark, snagging the NL Rookie of the Year award and later winning MVP honors twice. DeLauter, hailing from West Virginia, took a different path, spending more time in the minors due to injuries before finally making his MLB debut at 24.
And what a debut it has been. DeLauter has already etched his name in the record books, becoming just the third player to homer in each of his first three games. He launched four homers against the Seattle Mariners, including two in his first regular-season game.
Standing at 6-foot-3, DeLauter combines his unique swing with impressive bat-to-ball skills, allowing him to generate significant power. His early success is a testament to his potential, and if he continues on this trajectory, he might just follow in Harper's footsteps in more ways than one.
