The Giants are moving on from Odell Beckham Jr. after only three weeks back in the building, ending a short reunion that never turned into much on the field.
According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, New York is releasing Beckham ahead of Week 4. Schultz reported, "Sources: The Giants are releasing WR Odell Beckham Jr.," and the move comes a day after the team traded for J.J. McCarthy and a few days after its Week 3 win over the Tennessee Titans.
Beckham’s return was always more about the story than the stat sheet, and the stat sheet stayed empty. In three games, he played 19 snaps and did not catch a pass. In the rainy win over Tennessee, he was on the field for just six snaps.
That left the Giants with a roster spot tied up by a veteran who wasn’t producing, and the front office appears ready to use it elsewhere. Braxton Berrios is likely to take Beckham’s roster place, and the Giants are not expected to cut another receiver to make room for Beckham.
A return to the practice squad is possible if the Giants want to keep him nearby, but the more likely outcome is that Beckham looks for his next opportunity in free agency. The Los Angeles Rams are mentioned as a team that could use help at wide receiver, and he would have other options as well.
For now, though, Beckham’s second run with the Giants looks like it’s over. It gave the season an early feel-good angle, but it didn’t give New York anything tangible on Sundays.
