Brayan Rocchio Poised to Shine for Team Italy in WBC Semifinal

Guardians infielder Brayan Rocchio steps up to bolster Team Italy's chances in a surprising WBC run, bringing his postseason prowess to the international stage.

Brayan Rocchio is about to take his "Rocctober" magic from Northeast Ohio to the international stage, as he's set to join Team Italy for their World Baseball Classic (WBC) semifinal against Venezuela. This opportunity comes after Cubs infielder Miles Mastrobuoni suffered a calf injury, opening the door for Rocchio's call-up by Team Italy manager Francisco Cervelli.

Though Rocchio hails from Caracas, Venezuela, his Italian heritage through his grandparents makes him eligible to represent Italy. Known for his clutch performances, Rocchio has a knack for stepping up when it matters most-a trait that Northeast Ohio fans have come to appreciate over the past couple of years.

Rocchio first captured attention in 2024 when he hit .333 with a homer in the postseason, earning the moniker "Rocctober." While the following year saw some struggles, including a stint in Triple-A, Rocchio rebounded by midseason to become a staple in the Guardians' lineup, transitioning into a full-time second baseman. His regular season concluded with a .233/.290/.340 slash line over 115 games, but he made his mark with a walk-off homer against the Rangers, clinching the AL Central title for Cleveland, and adding another key home run in the postseason.

Now, Rocchio joins an Italian squad that has defied expectations by reaching the WBC semifinals. Italy's journey included an undefeated run in Pool B, featuring teams like Mexico and the USA, and a thrilling 8-6 victory over Puerto Rico in the quarterfinals.

This spring, Rocchio has been in fine form, posting a .313/.389/.531 slash line with a home run, four doubles, and four RBIs over 12 games. His performance has all but secured his spot as the Guardians' starting second baseman for Opening Day, with the WBC providing him a unique stage to showcase his talents just before the MLB season kicks off.

Guardians manager Stephen Vogt commented on Rocchio's temporary departure for the WBC, noting that the timing aligns well with his preparation for the season. Rocchio's participation in these high-stakes games can only enhance his readiness for what promises to be an exciting year ahead.
