Brayan Rocchio looked like he had finally settled in for the Cleveland Guardians.
For a while, the shortstop gave them exactly what they needed: elite defense, a little pop, and a bat that kept trending in the right direction. Before the break, he had put together a 113 wRC+, which made him comfortably an above-average offensive player.
The second half has told a very different story.
Before Wednesday’s game, when he was benched for rookie Angel Genao, Rocchio had gone ice cold, hitting .181/.217/.257 after the All-Star break. That comes with a .474 OPS and a 30 wRC+, meaning he has been 70 percent worse than the league-average hitter since the break.
That kind of production leaves a player hanging on the edge, and Rocchio is there now. His bat has become so unreliable that he’s drifting toward unplayable territory, the same kind of slide that already sent him down to Triple-A in early 2025. If the slump keeps going, the Guardians may be forced into some awkward choices again.
And those choices are real. Cleveland has three legitimate middle-infield options in Rocchio, Genao, and Travis Bazzana, though Bazzana can only handle second base. Rocchio and Bazzana have both struggled at the plate, but Bazzana has at least flashed enough to keep hope alive.
Rocchio hasn’t had that cushion lately.
Manager Stephen Vogt could go with Genao at shortstop and Bazzana at second base, which would push Rocchio into a reserve role. Whether he actually makes that move remains to be seen, but the possibility is clearly on the table.
Defensively, Rocchio is still the best of the group by a wide margin. The problem is the floor with the bat, and right now that floor is sitting very low. The question is whether he can rediscover the first-half version of himself before the Guardians decide they can’t keep waiting.
