The Blue Jays’ push in the American League Wild Card race just took another hit, and it hands the Guardians a little more breathing room.
Toronto placed Shane Bieber on the 15-day injured list earlier today with right teres major inflammation, another troubling setback for a pitcher whose career has been marked by injuries. It also comes at a bad time for a Blue Jays club that has already put Trey Yesavage and Jameson Taillon on the injured list this month.
That matters in Cleveland because Toronto is one of the teams chasing the Guardians for the final Wild Card spot. The Guardians currently hold a two-game lead over the Blue Jays, with two other teams sitting between them.
Bieber’s latest injury is especially frustrating because Toronto had been getting useful work out of him down the stretch. The Blue Jays have stayed in the postseason mix despite an offense that “stinks” and a pitching staff that is nowhere near last season’s level, and Bieber’s strong second-half run was part of that 19-17 surge.
Now he’s out again, and the timing could hardly be worse.
For Guardians fans, the injury history is familiar. Bieber missed time in 2023 with elbow inflammation, then underwent Tommy John surgery early in the 2024 campaign and didn’t return until after Cleveland dealt him to Toronto at last year’s deadline. He pitched well for the Blue Jays after the trade, but elbow inflammation popped up again this spring and sent him to the 60-day injured list.
He came back at the end of June and, for the most part, looked effective aside from two ugly outings. Even more surprising, there hadn’t been any public warning signs before this latest trip to the injured list. Bieber had allowed just one run over seven innings against the Rays on Sunday, and it appears something surfaced during Toronto’s off day on Monday before the club moved quickly to make the IL move at the first chance.
The Blue Jays will still lean on a rotation led by likely Cy Young candidate Dylan Cease, but Bieber’s absence puts more pressure on José Soriano and Max Scherzer. Soriano has been solid since Toronto acquired him from the Angels at the trade deadline, while Scherzer has a 7.40 ERA across multiple stints on the injured list.
And the schedule isn’t doing Toronto any favors. The Blue Jays and Guardians are set to meet in a three-game series at Progressive Field at the start of September, and Bieber’s injury makes the road even steeper for Toronto. Even if Cease takes one of those starts, Cleveland now has another clear edge in a matchup that already looked important in the Wild Card chase.
