Angel Martinez had a tough rookie season with the Cleveland Guardians, struggling at the plate with a .224 average and a .628 OPS. But Spring Training in 2026 is telling a different story.
Martinez is showing signs of a breakout, boasting an OPS over 1.000. This is a significant leap from last year, where he looked like one of the least effective hitters in the league.
In Spring, Martinez has emerged as a standout performer. His nine extra-base hits tie him with Shea Langeliers and Max Muncy of the Athletics for the most in the Cactus League. This is a remarkable improvement considering he managed just 36 extra-base hits in 446 at-bats last season.
With Steven Kwan likely taking over center field duties, Martinez's role could have been in jeopardy. However, his Spring performance is making a strong case for him to remain a key player. Young talents like Chase DeLauter, CJ Kayfus, and George Valera are eager for playing time, and veterans such as Nolan Jones and Daniel Schneemann might see reduced roles.
One of Martinez's advantages is being the sole right-handed batter in a crowded outfield. The Guardians are in dire need of right-handed power, and Martinez stepping up would be a welcome development.
At just 24, Martinez's struggles last year might have been growing pains. If his current form continues into the regular season, the Guardians could have another young star ready to shine.
