Angel Genao didn’t take long to leave a mark on the Guardians’ latest push.
The 22-year-old, who has been in Cleveland for a little less than a month, delivered his first real signature moment on Tuesday night in the Guardians’ win over the Blue Jays. Coming off the bench, Genao turned around the first pitch he saw from Joe Mantiply and drove it 426 feet to left field for a seventh-inning pinch-hit homer that pushed Cleveland’s lead to 4-1.
He didn’t stop there. Genao paired the bat with the glove two innings later, ranging to his left to field a grounder and then firing a jump throw to second to get Alejandro Kirk. It was the kind of sequence that makes a young player look a lot older than he is.
That’s a sharp contrast from where the Guardians were earlier in the year, when they were cycling through David Fry and the light-hitting Daniel Schneemann in that spot. Schneemann was back on the roster Tuesday through one of the team’s extra roster spots, but most of his work now is expected to come late in games as a defensive replacement. Genao, meanwhile, is making his noise in short bursts - even when he only gets a few innings to work with.
His homer came in the middle of a big Cleveland power stretch. Patrick Bailey followed with a go-ahead opposite-field two-run homer, and Angel Martínez added another two-run blast in the eighth to put the game away.
The offense was more than enough for Gavin Williams, who turned in one of the best starts of his career. Williams struck out a career-high 13 over seven dominant innings. His outing also reinforced why Cleveland could feel good about him as a Game 2 starter in a postseason series, even after his brief outing last week dented his slim Cy Young hopes.
The victory also gave the Guardians more breathing room in the Wild Card race. Toronto is now 2 1/2 games behind Cleveland, and the Blue Jays are running out of room to avoid leaving Cleveland with a serious postseason hole.
Genao wasn’t exactly on Blue Jays fans’ minds earlier this season. After Tuesday, that’s probably changed. Now the question is whether he can add to the damage in the final two games of the series.
