ESPN’s College GameDay opened the 2026 season with a title pick board that left the preseason No. 1 team completely out in the cold.
Ahead of LSU-Clemson, the show asked its panel to call the College Football Playoff championship, and the answers came in four different directions. Desmond Howard went with Texas over Notre Dame.
Nick Saban took Miami over Texas. Pat McAfee picked Indiana over Ole Miss.
Kirk Herbstreit chose Notre Dame over Indiana.
Ohio State? Not a single vote.
Saban’s pick was the loudest one on the board. He was the only regular panelist to put Miami in the final and the only one to actually have the Hurricanes winning the whole thing. That kind of praise is flattering, but it also comes with a built-in warning label when the spotlight gets this bright.
“The number of good teams that we talked about today, there's no magic in terms of who you pick and it's just your best guess, but I'm saying Miami versus Texas and Miami wins.”
Saban’s Miami pick wasn’t exactly out of nowhere. He was already talking up the Hurricanes last year, saying they deserved a spot in the CFP, and Mario Cristobal - a former Saban assistant - knows plenty about handling expectations. Still, the more noise Miami makes, the more carefully it’ll have to keep its focus where it belongs.
The rest of the panel was also bullish on Miami in the ACC. Howard, Saban, Herbstreit and Wilson all picked the Hurricanes to win the conference, while McAfee went with North Carolina.
The bigger eyebrow-raiser was Ohio State getting shut out of the championship predictions entirely. The Buckeyes entered the weekend as the AP No. 1 team, yet Howard, Saban, McAfee and Herbstreit all left them off their title-game picks.
Saban did back Ohio State to win the Big Ten, while Howard and Wilson chose Oregon and McAfee and Herbstreit went with Indiana.
