Donovan Mitchell had no better read on LeBron James’ free-agency decision than anyone else.
When James was weighing his next move after announcing he was leaving the Los Angeles Lakers last July, the Cleveland Cavaliers were among the teams hoping to land him. Instead, after nearly a month of waiting, James chose Philadelphia and said he would finish his career with the 76ers.
Mitchell said he was just as in the dark as the rest of the basketball world.
“I knew probably as much as you did,” Mitchell said when asked about James signing with Philadelphia.
He added that Cleveland still made the most sense to him, and that he expected James to either return to the Cavaliers or land elsewhere.
“I think for a lot of reasons it made sense (for him to sign with Cleveland),” Mitchell said. “I didn’t think Philly. I thought if he didn’t come here, he’d be in Golden State.”
James now joins a Philadelphia team that stands in the Cavs’ way in the Eastern Conference. Former Cavs general manager Mike Gansey reshaped the Sixers’ roster in a matter of weeks, turning them into one of the conference favorites.
Cleveland will get an early look at the new-look Sixers, with the teams set to open the season in Philadelphia in under a month.
Mitchell said the Cavaliers aren’t dwelling on the missed opportunity.
“For us, it’s about moving forward and not really looking back at that,” Mitchell said. “They’re an opponent.

[Edgecomb], [Joel] Embiid, (and) Anfernee Simons coming off the bench. They got a lot of talent over ther.
They’ll be a fierce competitor so we’re excited.”
