LeBron James may be heading into free agency with one of the most surprising possible landing spots attached to his name.
According to ESPN’s Anthony Slater and Shams Charania, the Warriors are hoping to sign James when free agency opens Tuesday at 6 p.m., and they want to pair him again with Anthony Davis, who is currently with the Wizards. The idea would reunite James and Davis after they won a title together with the Lakers in the Orlando bubble.
That path is complicated, starting with the money and the moving parts. Draymond Green declined his $27.6 million player option on Monday morning, which gives Golden State more flexibility to try to make a deal like this work. Slater also pointed out that James, Davis and Green are all represented by Rich Paul of Klutch Sports.
James is set to become an unrestricted free agent when legal tampering begins Tuesday. He turns 42 on Dec. 30 and has spent the last eight seasons with the Lakers. In 479 games for Los Angeles, he has averaged 25.9 points, 7.7 rebounds and 7.9 assists while shooting 51.3% from the floor.
For a while, the chatter around James centered on a possible return to Cleveland for a third stint before he retires. These latest Warriors links could change that picture.
Davis would be a tougher piece to land. If Golden State wants him, it would have to work out a trade with Washington. Kevin O’Connor of Yahoo Sports reported that any deal may require the Warriors to send Jimmy Butler III, who is on an expiring $57 million contract and is coming off the torn ACL he suffered in January, along with draft capital.
Washington acquired Davis in February, but he did not play a game for the Wizards last season because of hand and groin injuries.
James and Davis could end up tied together again - this time in a uniform nobody saw coming.
