The Cavaliers were aiming to lock in a playoff spot for the fourth straight year, but that celebration will have to wait. Instead, it was the Lakers who punched their ticket to the postseason for the fourth consecutive season.
Evan Mobley had a tough night against the Lakers, managing only six points on four attempts in 22 minutes. He added four rebounds and four assists to his stat line.
In a matchup that pitted him against the legendary 41-year-old LeBron James, Mobley found himself outmatched. It was a challenging game for Mobley, especially with his family cheering from courtside, as reported by Chris Fedor.
Back in his home state of California, Mobley was hoping to impress his father and brother in the stands. However, he followed up a stellar performance against the Utah Jazz with a quieter night against the Lakers, where the Cavaliers fell to 47-28.
Just days before, Mobley had been electric against the Jazz, scoring a season-high 34 points, grabbing 17 rebounds, and adding three assists and three blocks. He shot an impressive 15-of-21 from the field in that game.
Cleveland coach Kenny Atkinson acknowledged LeBron’s defensive prowess, noting how effectively he contained Mobley.
“We’ve seen LeBron guard every position from 1 to 5. I’ve always felt he doesn’t get enough credit for his defense. He played Evan and our team really well tonight,” Atkinson remarked.
The Cavaliers will now turn their focus to securing a playoff spot as they prepare to face the Golden State Warriors on Thursday.
