The Cleveland Cavaliers have already checked one major offseason box by re-signing Donovan Mitchell, but the bigger question hanging over the summer still centers on LeBron James. Until that gets answered, the Cavs are staying patient. Even so, there’s a veteran free agent sitting out there who fits Cleveland almost too neatly: Kevin Love.
A reunion with Love would bring back familiar ground for the franchise and give the roster another piece who can help right away off the bench. Love is an unrestricted free agent after spending last season with the Utah Jazz, where he averaged 6.7 points and 5.8 rebounds per game while shooting 37% from three-point land in 37 appearances.
His role in Utah was never going to look like the one he once had in Cleveland. The Jazz were focused on improving their draft position late in the season, and the shifting lineups made it tough for Love to settle into a larger role. Still, the production showed he can contribute in the right setting.
That setting could be back in Cleveland. Love was a key part of the Cavaliers’ 2016 NBA championship team and earned two All-Star selections during his nine seasons with the Wine and Gold. His connection with LeBron only adds to the appeal, especially with the two remaining close over the years and often showing that friendship on social media.
Even in the later stage of his career, Love still brings useful skills. Over the last three seasons, he has settled into smaller but meaningful roles, and he could slide into a backup power forward spot while giving the Cavs floor spacing, rebounding and veteran leadership. Those are the kinds of traits that can matter on a bench that lacked composure and consistency during last season’s playoff run.
Cleveland is still waiting to see what LeBron decides before making its next move. But Love makes sense either way. His championship experience, leadership and familiarity with the organization would give the Cavaliers another proven voice as they try to take the next step after falling short the past two seasons, even after finishing as the No. 1 seed in the 2024-25 season and reaching the Eastern Conference finals last time out.
