Kevin Love may have just twisted the knife a little deeper for Cavaliers fans still stinging from LeBron James’ decision to sign with the Sixers.
According to Dave McMenamin of ESPN, Love is exploring whether Philadelphia could be his next stop, with his agent, Jeff Schwartz of Excel Sports Management, already in contact with the 76ers’ front office since James chose Philadelphia in free agency. It is not a done deal, though. McMenamin reported that the Sixers’ roster is already full, which means they would need to make a move before bringing in the 38-year-old, and the front office might not be eager to do that.
If the fit does happen, it would only add to Cleveland’s frustration, especially if Philadelphia is still standing next June.
Love’s interest in reuniting with LeBron makes sense on a few levels. He spent last season in Utah, where he appeared in 37 games and averaged 6.7 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 1.8 assists while shooting 39.7% from the field and 37.3% from deep in 16.6 minutes per game.
He would give the Sixers some frontcourt depth, even if his role would likely stay limited. The one exception?
Games against the Cavaliers, where the source suggests he’d “turn back the clock and average 20 points.”
There’s also the obvious championship angle. A reunion with James would give Love another shot at a title before retirement, something that would not be on the table if he simply returned to the Jazz. McMenamin noted that Love has a “strong relationship” with Will Hardy, but Utah is in the same boat as Philadelphia in one important way: the roster is full.
The Jazz are expected to be better than they were a year ago, though they still are not close to being viewed as a contender. Still, they are moving in the right direction.
For now, Love is waiting to see where his own path leads, and whether it brings him back to the Eastern Conference after a short stay away. He had to wait and see where LeBron landed, just like everyone else, and if James had wound up with the Cavaliers instead, Love would have been looking at a return to Cleveland.
So the old group may not be getting back together the way Cavaliers fans hoped. But part of it could still reunite.
