Kenny Atkinson Calls Out Cavs Defense After Win Despite Streak

Amid a winning streak, Cavaliers coach Kenny Atkinson insists that the key to postseason success lies in fortifying their defense and calls on team leaders for crucial support.

The Cleveland Cavaliers are riding high on a four-game winning streak, thanks in large part to Donovan Mitchell and James Harden, who combined for an impressive 66 points in their latest victory over the Orlando Magic. However, amidst the celebration, Coach Kenny Atkinson didn't shy away from addressing a glaring issue: defense. Despite the 136-131 win, Atkinson pointed out that allowing opponents to score over 128 points in four games over two weeks is a red flag.

In the postgame huddle, Atkinson laid it out clearly: "If we're gonna play defense like this, we're gonna have a short playoff stint. We can't rely solely on outscoring teams, especially when playoff basketball demands more than just offensive firepower."

Evan Mobley echoed his coach’s concerns but remained optimistic. "We know what we're capable of," Mobley said.

"We have time to improve, and everyone understands we need to step up defensively. It's about maintaining focus and disrupting opponents more consistently."

Max Strus was on the same page, acknowledging the need for a defensive identity. "131 points is just too many," Strus admitted. "Defense has to be our calling card.

We can't just blame Jarrett Allen's absence. It starts with our on-ball defense and communication."

Mobley added that the team sometimes allows opponents to dictate the pace. "We need to be more physical and control the game. It's about being disruptive both on and off the ball."

Atkinson's frustration was evident, especially regarding the team's communication and competitive spirit. "We've got two weeks to figure this out," he emphasized. "We can't just think we can outscore everyone."

Mitchell appreciates Atkinson’s honesty and sees it as a call to action. "We all have big goals, and it's up to us to fix these issues. It's about executing the game plan and not giving teams second chances."

The Cavs are determined to resolve this defensive dilemma. "We've been talking about it," Mobley noted.

"We're all working on it, and we have the right mindset. We've done it before, and we can do it again."

Mitchell is confident but knows the team must execute. "We can't just assume things will fall into place. We have to make it happen."

Atkinson and the team refuse to use Allen's absence as an excuse. "We miss having two bigs on the floor," Mobley admitted.

"But we can't lean on that. It's on me and everyone else to step up."

Mitchell added, "We have 10 games left to get this right. It's on us in the locker room to make it happen."

Atkinson believes in his squad's potential and is pushing them to take ownership. "Our leaders need to rally the team to defend better.

We've got another chance tomorrow against a strong offensive team in the Miami Heat. It's time to shift our mentality and focus on defense."
