The Los Angeles Lakers have had their fair share of challenges this season, especially on the defensive end and with their 3-point shooting. Their struggle to maintain a consistent fast-break game has also been a concern.
However, when it comes to star power, the Lakers can match up with any team in the NBA-provided everyone stays healthy. As they prepare to face the Los Angeles Clippers, they're in good shape health-wise, and that bodes well for building on their solid 33-21 record.
The Lakers have been on a bit of a roll, winning nine of their last 14 games. Head coach JJ Redick has noticed some positive trends that suggest the team might be finding its groove.
Redick shared, “Defensively, since we switched to a zone defense in the last 14 games, we’ve improved significantly. We've been the top half-court defense when starting in our zone, and our transition defense has tightened up because we’re sprinting back more effectively.”
Overall, the Lakers rank 23rd in defensive rating and 16th in fast-break points allowed per game. Yet, in the recent 14-game stretch, they've climbed to 13th in defensive rating and are tied for 14th in limiting opponents' fast-break points.
Offensively, Redick highlights a key strength for the Lakers: their ability to penetrate the paint. “We’ve had some of our highest paint touch rate games recently, and when we get into the paint, we’re elite. Our success comes when we move the ball, trust each other, and convert those opportunities into assists.”
While they may not be the NBA's top offensive team, the Lakers do lead in overall field-goal percentage. Their offensive success hinges on attacking the paint, moving the ball, and executing bursts of up-tempo play.
As the season progresses, the Lakers' ability to maintain these improvements will be crucial in their quest for success.
