James Harden’s return to Cleveland has felt like a matter of when, not if, and that picture may be coming into focus.
For months, Harden has signaled that he wants to be back with the Cavaliers, and the team has been operating with the same assumption. The holdup hasn’t been about the destination. It’s been about the details of the deal.
On Monday, ESPN’s Marc Spears said on NBA Today that a resolution could be near.
“The Cavaliers are working through different iterations of a deal, trying to come up with something that’s best for James and also best for them,” Spears said. “And to James’ credit, they’re saying that he’s been patient, his people have been patient, and I hear that they expect a resolution to come soon for him to re-sign.”
That update lands at an interesting moment for Cleveland, which is also still in the hunt for Nuggets restricted free agent Peyton Watson. ESPN’s Dave McMenamin said Monday that the Cavs are a “serious” candidate to acquire the 23-year-old wing.
That chase may be part of why Harden’s contract hasn’t been pushed across the finish line already. If Cleveland is trying to work out a sign-and-trade for Watson, there are financial and roster pieces to sort through, and holding onto some flexibility while those options are explored makes sense.
Harden turned down his $42.3 million player option earlier this offseason, but the expectation from the start has been that he and the Cavaliers would land on a new multiyear agreement.
