Cavs' Defensive Struggles: Can Evan Mobley Lead the Turnaround?
The Cleveland Cavaliers are facing a defensive conundrum as they head toward the postseason. Since the All-Star break, their defensive rating has slipped to 18th in the league, plummeting to 23rd over the last 15 games. While their offensive firepower ranks them 5th in offensive rating and 7th in points per game, it’s clear that their current defensive form isn’t championship material.
So, what's causing this defensive dip? It’s unlikely a personnel issue.
Last season, the Cavs boasted the 8th best defensive rating, and they’ve since added standout defender Keon Ellis and received significant contributions from Jaylon Tyson, despite his recent absences. James Harden, known more for his offensive prowess, has been part of defensively successful teams in the past, so the issue isn’t solely on his shoulders.
Effort might be a factor. The team isn’t showing the relentless hustle needed, and their 3-point defense has notably regressed, ranking in the bottom 7 for opponent 3-point percentage and makes. Evan Mobley remains a defensive stalwart, likely headed for All-Defense first team honors, but his impact hasn’t been as game-changing lately.
For the Cavs to make a deep playoff run, Mobley must return to his Defensive Player of the Year form. But it’s not all on him. The entire team needs to ramp up their effort, tighten perimeter defense, and dive for those loose balls.
If the Cavaliers can address these issues, Mobley’s elite defense could be the catalyst they need. By emulating Chet Holmgren’s playoff performance for the Thunder last year, shutting down the paint consistently, Mobley can elevate the Cavs’ defensive potential. The pieces are there; it’s time for Cleveland to put them together.
