Donovan Mitchell delivered a performance for the ages on Sunday, marking career, season, and team milestones in a single game for the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Just three minutes into the clash against the Dallas Mavericks, Mitchell sank his 200th three-pointer of the season. This marks the fourth time he's hit that benchmark in a season, showcasing his consistent sharpshooting prowess.
Midway through the third quarter, Mitchell received a pass from backcourt partner James Harden and nailed a 25-foot three-pointer from the left wing, pushing his career total past 15,000 points. This achievement places him alongside elite company, as he's only the fifth player since 2017 to reach this milestone, joining the likes of Harden, DeMar DeRozan, Nikola Jokic, and Giannis Antetokounmpo. Moreover, he's the 35th player in NBA history to notch 15,000 points within his first nine seasons-a testament to his scoring ability.
In the final quarter, Mitchell scored 20 points for the 193rd time, surpassing Cavaliers legend Mark Price for the sixth-most in franchise history. He's now just four games away from overtaking World B. Free (196) to break into the top five.
Mitchell's stellar year deserves recognition, though the Cavaliers have hit a rough patch, going 4-5 in their last nine games. They currently hold the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference, with the Orlando Magic and Toronto Raptors close behind.
Following what Mitchell described as a “bad loss” to the Mavericks, alongside Max Strus and head coach Kenny Atkinson, the team is facing its first real adversity with this lineup.
Mitchell remains optimistic, stating, “I'm not going to use the word concern. It's something we've got 12 games to fix.
We haven't faced much adversity with this group, so it's about how we handle it. Two tough defensive losses hurt us, but we've got an important trip and some home games coming up.”
He added, “It's not always going to be easy. We'd love to win all these games, but you learn more through losses. Use them to improve and get better.”
Mitchell's milestones highlight his impact, but the Cavaliers have work to do as they push toward the playoffs.
