Even so, it’s tough to give the organization and coaching staff the benefit of the doubt after the same postseason problems keep showing up. The regular season has looked fine.
The playoffs have not. Another failure could be the final straw.
That’s why Mitchell’s future feels so fragile despite the new contract. If the Cavs were to move Evan Mobley, why would Mitchell want to stay? And if Cleveland keeps this group together, why would he want to keep spending his prime on a team with a lower ceiling than the league’s top contenders?
Mitchell may want to remain in Cleveland - and it does seem that way - but that doesn’t mean it’s automatically the best move for the franchise. The payroll is expensive, the results haven’t matched it, and trading their star could be the cleanest way to bring back assets and start over.
