CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland Cavaliers have anchored their hopes on a pivotal question: Is Donovan Mitchell the franchise player who can lead them to an NBA championship?
On the latest Wine and Gold Talk podcast, Cavs beat reporter Chris Fedor tackled this head-on. When asked if Mitchell can truly be the centerpiece of a championship team, Fedor's response was candid: “I think the only way to answer that honestly is say, I don’t know. The jury is still out.”
Fedor elaborated, pointing out that championship-caliber number ones typically don’t mirror Mitchell’s style or stature. It’s a tough truth for Cleveland as they edge closer to the playoffs.
Mitchell, now in his ninth NBA season, has yet to break through past the second round as the leading option, whether it was alongside Rudy Gobert in Utah or Evan Mobley in Cleveland.
Podcast host Ethan Sands pushed further, highlighting the defensive challenge: “Are you capable of being locked in for 40-45 minutes for a seven-game playoff series where you’re not only asked to be the offensive focal point, you’re asked to not be the defensive liability?”
With Darius Garland no longer in the picture, Mitchell is the primary focus for opposing offenses. Playoff teams will relentlessly test him, demanding he be both the driving force and the defensive anchor.
Fedor noted that historical championship teams are often led by players like Kevin Durant, LeBron James, or Kawhi Leonard. Mitchell doesn’t fit that mold. While comparisons to Stephen Curry and Isiah Thomas arise, Fedor emphasized, “Donovan isn’t Steph.”
Even James Harden seems to grasp this dynamic. Fedor shared that Harden’s focus has been on integrating Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley more into the game plan, understanding the multifaceted demands of playoff basketball.
“He understands what the playoffs are all about and he understands how important those kinds of pieces are to a particular playoff run,” Fedor explained.
So where does this leave Mitchell? With arguably his strongest supporting cast and a less daunting Eastern Conference landscape, this season offers a prime opportunity. Boston stands as the main hurdle on his path to the Finals.
