The Cavaliers are shaking things up, and the latest move involves parting ways with a familiar face on the margins of their roster. Cleveland plans to waive two-way wing Luke Travers, a move coming right on the heels of their trade that sent De’Andre Hunter to the Kings.
In that deal, the Cavaliers are bringing in veteran point guard Dennis Schroder and emerging guard/forward Keon Ellis. Meanwhile, big man Dario Saric is on his way to Chicago as part of the broader transaction.
As for Travers, the 6-foot-6 wing has spent the bulk of his time developing with the Cleveland Charge in the G League. Over two seasons, he’s logged 24 NBA appearances-12 last season and 12 more this year-averaging 1.7 points and 1.8 rebounds per game in limited minutes. While his NBA stat line hasn’t jumped off the page, Travers has been a steady presence in the Cavaliers’ developmental system.
Cleveland originally took a flier on Travers in the 2022 NBA Draft, selecting him 58th overall. He signed his first two-way deal with the team in August 2024 and re-upped this past offseason. But with the roster reshuffling underway and new backcourt depth arriving, the Cavaliers are making room-and Travers is the odd man out.
This isn’t the only two-way situation Cleveland is monitoring. Forward Nae’Qwan Tomlin is nearing the 50-game limit on his current two-way contract, a threshold that forces teams to make a decision: either convert the deal to a standard NBA contract or risk losing the player. All signs point toward the Cavs leaning toward the former, which would be a notable vote of confidence in Tomlin’s development and potential.
The Cavaliers are clearly positioning themselves for the stretch run with a retooled rotation and some tough roster decisions. As the trade deadline approaches, this won’t be the last move we see from Cleveland-but it’s a clear signal that the front office is focused on fine-tuning the roster for both the present and the future.
