The Cleveland Cavaliers’ Summer League group heads into tonight’s matchup with Miami trying to avoid an 0-3 start after a 103-94 loss to Detroit yesterday afternoon.
That game had its rough stretches, especially early, as Cleveland spent much of the afternoon trying to keep pace with the Pistons. A third-quarter push helped trim the gap, but Detroit steadied itself and finished the job. Even so, the Cavs left with a few performances worth building on.
Meleek Thomas was the biggest bright spot by a wide margin. He poured in a game-high 30 points and added seven assists and four steals, making a strong case that Cleveland may have landed a real steal after trading back in the draft to save money and still getting him. After the draft, GM Koby Altman said Thomas may not be the best fit for the roster, but also made clear the Cavs were high on the small guard.
So far, Thomas has done little to quiet the optimism. His scoring and playmaking have stood out in Summer League, and he’s also shown he can be useful off the bench. The bigger questions around his game are still ahead, with the regular season set to provide the real test against top-level competition.
Nae’Qwan Tomlin also turned in another encouraging outing. He scored 17 points on 7-10 shooting and continued to show the athleticism and defensive presence that could matter for Cleveland next season. With Dean Wade and Keon Ellis gone, the opportunity for Tomlin looks real, and if this level of play carries over, he could be in line for a major bump in minutes and a role as a first man off the bench.
Ernest Udeh, Jr. showed improvement from the first game as well, bringing the defense he was known for in college and helping Cleveland finish with 18 steals overall.
Xaivian Lee and Rashaun Agee haven’t been especially eye-catching through the first two games, but with the back-to-back tonight, they should see more minutes as the team manages other players’ workloads.
Miami comes in at 1-1 and has its own pair of scorers making noise. Ryan Conwell and Jahmir Young are both averaging well over 20 points per game, giving the Heat multiple players who can get hot in a hurry. That means Cleveland’s defensive-minded choices will be under the microscope again tonight.
For the Cavs, the need is simple: get a win, and maybe settle things down a little. Summer League is about individual showings and contract opportunities, but the team aspect still matters, and a better result would go a long way for morale.
Cleveland and Miami tip off tonight at 8:00 pm on Amazon Prime Video.

Kenny Atkinson Just Gave Cavaliers Fans A Reason To Believe Again
A fresh wave of speculation has put Cleveland back in the middle of the conversation after LeBron James let the Lakers know he will not return for his 24th NBA season. The possibility of a reunion has naturally stirred up Cavaliers fans, and reports tying James Harden to a deal that could help clear the way have only added to the intrigue around what might be coming next.
Kenny Atkinson did little to cool the buzz, instead leaving the impression that something significant could be brewing for the roster. The exact move remains unclear, and James next stop is still unresolved, but the tone around Cleveland has shifted enough to make fans wonder whether this summer could still deliver a familiar face and a major jolt to the teams future. Why Kenny Atkinson Thinks Cavs Rookie Could Be More Than A Flier
Kenny Atkinson did not hide his enthusiasm when the Cavaliers landed Meleek Thomas in the second round of the NBA draft, and the early Summer League returns have only added to the intrigue. Through two games, Thomas has looked like more than a developmental add-on, putting up points while showing enough all-around activity to make Clevelands staff keep watching closely.
What stands out most for Atkinson is the rookies defensive upside, which could be the clearest path to real minutes on a roster that will demand reliability on both ends. His college coach has made a similar point about Thomas length and room to grow physically, and if that side of his game translates the way Cleveland believes it can, the rookie might end up being a lot more than a simple flier. This Cavs Reunion Trade Idea Feels Built For LeBron Rumors
A Bleacher Report trade idea has Cleveland back in the kind of reunion chatter that always seems to follow this franchise when big names start moving around the league. The proposal lands as a multi-team swap with Miami and Dallas in the mix, and it would ask the Cavaliers to part with a real chunk of frontcourt and backcourt depth in exchange for a splashy name that instantly changes the conversation around the roster.
The problem is the basketball case is hard to square with what Cleveland already has built, especially with the cost attached to the deal and the questions that come with the player at the center of it. Even with the LeBron-adjacent buzz hovering around the concept, the fit looks awkward on paper, and the Cavs would have to decide whether the nostalgia and star power are worth the hit to their current structure.
