Meleek Thomas wasted little time making his mark for the Cleveland Cavaliers on Monday night.
In his regular-season debut, the rookie guard got out in transition after Anthony Edwards missed at the free-throw line, sprinted ahead of Minnesota’s defense and finished with a smooth layup to collect his first NBA bucket. The play came with a little more than three minutes left in the first quarter and gave the Cavs an early jolt at Rocket Arena in Cleveland.
Thomas kept building from there. Over his first six minutes on the floor, he scored eight points and knocked down 3 of 5 shots, including two 3-pointers that showed off the kind of range Cleveland saw in him during the summer. The former Arkansas Razorbacks guard looked comfortable, aggressive and ready to let it fly.
Cleveland took Thomas with the 34th pick in the second round of the 2026 NBA Draft, and he had already put together strong showings in Summer League and the preseason. He still has a long climb ahead in the NBA, especially with former NBA Most Valuable Player James Harden and Donovan Mitchell ahead of him in the rotation, but Monday offered an early glimpse of what he can bring.
Thomas spent one season in college under John Calipari at Arkansas before turning pro. Calipari has a track record of producing NBA talent, and Thomas is trying to carve out his own place on that list.
The Cavaliers came into Monday at 1-1 after beating the Brooklyn Nets at home on Saturday.

Donovan Mitchell Saved The Cavs In A Game Fans Won't Forget
The Cavaliers needed every bit of Donovan Mitchell on a night when Minnesota kept pushing them to the edge, and the result was the kind of overtime win that can linger with a team for a while. Cleveland escaped with a 127-125 victory after Mitchell led the way with 26 points, while Anthony Edwards poured in 47 for the Timberwolves in a game that never really let up.
Meleek Thomas also gave the Cavs a fresh storyline in his NBA debut, contributing offensively as Cleveland found just enough support around Mitchell to survive. With the game hanging in the balance deep into the fourth quarter and overtime, the Cavs had to lean hard on their star, and the kind of finish they pulled out is the sort of thing fans will remember long after the final buzzer. Meleek Thomas Just Put Pressure On A Tough Cavs Decision
Meleek Thomas arrived with the kind of debut that tends to get a front office thinking. In Clevelands 129-127 overtime win over Minnesota, the Cavaliers 2026 second-round pick gave the bench a real jolt, scoring efficiently and bringing the kind of active, disruptive defense that can swing a tight game. For a team always trying to squeeze value out of the back end of the roster, it was the sort of first impression that can quickly change a players standing.
The bigger issue now is less about one good night than what it means for the group around him. Cleveland has been searching for dependable depth, and Thomas looked like someone who could make that conversation a little more complicated than expected. If his role keeps growing, the Cavs may have to weigh not just his development, but how much room there is for everyone else on a roster where the margins are already thin. [Read more 🡒]
Cavs May Catch Minnesota Short-Handed In Early Measuring-Stick Test
A potential early-season measuring stick just got a little more interesting for Cleveland. Minnesota has Anthony Edwards on its injury report with a right knee designation heading into the matchup, while the rest of the Timberwolves projected starters are expected to be available aside from Donte DiVincenzo, who is still working back from an Achilles injury. The Cavaliers, meanwhile, are expected to be mostly healthy even if a few players remain sidelined.
Edwards may have picked up the issue in the previous game against Toronto, but he still logged 28 minutes and poured in 26 points before the designation surfaced. If hes limited or less than full strength, it would change the tone of a game that already carries some real barometer value for Cleveland, which is trying to see where it stands against one of the Wests more complete rosters.
