Peyton Watson is the headline-grabber, fresh off a true breakout in 2025-26 and arriving with the kind of athletic juice Cleveland has been missing on the perimeter. But Hezonja has given the team another reason to feel good about the offseason haul, especially after what he just did overseas.
The former top-five pick is coming to Cleveland after a strong 2025-26 season with Real Madrid, where he averaged 17.5 points, 4.9 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.0 steal in about 23.3 minutes per game. He helped push his team to the top of the standings and was rewarded as the Spanish ACB Regular Season MVP.
That puts him in a notable line of international standouts who have made noise in the NBA, including Facundo Campazzo in 2023-24, Luka Doncic in 2017-18, Nikola Mirotic in 2012-13, and Arvydas Sabonic in 1993-94 and 94-95.
Hezonja has been building a reputation as one of the top players on the international stage, and now he’s making his return to the NBA after more than six years away. When he was asked to describe what Cleveland is getting, he didn’t hold back.
What stood out just as much at media day was his body. Hezonja showed up looking noticeably bigger than the last time he was in an NBA uniform, and the change was impossible to miss.
Cleveland lists him at 242 pounds, but Hezonja told reporters he’s currently around 260. He also said he entered the league at roughly 190 pounds in 2015, which makes the transformation even more striking.
That added some fuel to the discussion about how Kenny Atkinson might use him. The likeliest path, based on past experience, is as the team’s backup power forward, though that isn’t locked in yet because Nae’Qwan Tomlin is also in the mix for that spot.
