The Cavaliers are still chasing LeBron James, but that hasn’t pushed Jonathan Kuminga off their board.
Cleveland remains in the mix for both players, and Michael Scotto of HoopsHype reported that James is still the top target while the team continues to monitor Kuminga, the unrestricted free agent forward who finished last season with the Hawks.
“Furthermore, while LeBron James remains atop their wish list, the Cavaliers have continued to keep tabs on Kuminga consistently,” Scotto wrote. “Amid Cleveland’s pursuit of both players, Max Strus and Dennis Schroder have come up as potential trade candidates.”
That part matters, because Cleveland’s cap situation means any serious move would likely require some roster shuffling. Strus and Schroder are two names that could be moved to open up more flexibility if the Cavaliers decide to press ahead on either front.
The bigger takeaway is simple: Cleveland’s interest in Kuminga has not faded while it waits on James.
There are even scenarios, as Hoops Wire has reported, in which the Cavs could wind up with both James and Kuminga. Making that happen would take some creative salary-cap work, and the exact path remains unclear.
For now, though, James is the priority. He has been an unrestricted free agent for nearly a month, with the Cavs, Heat, 76ers and Warriors all linked to him. Golden State reportedly is not optimistic about its chances, while Cleveland has stayed in the conversation the whole way.
Kuminga’s market has been developing on its own. The 23-year-old has attracted interest from the Lakers, Clippers and Bucks, and he averaged 12.2 points and 5.6 rebounds overall last season after being traded from the Warriors to Atlanta at the deadline.
Cleveland’s connection to Kuminga isn’t new, either. The Cavs have been tied to him since free agency opened, he has worked out in Cleveland before, and his agent, Aaron Turner, is from nearby Orange, Ohio.
So the situation is still open-ended. The Cavaliers are waiting on LeBron, staying on Kuminga, and leaving room for the possibility that they may not have to pick one over the other.
