Aaron Gordon didn’t hide how he feels about Peyton Watson leaving Denver. The Nuggets forward made it clear that the bond goes well beyond basketball, even after Watson’s move to the Cavaliers this offseason.
Watson’s rise set the stage for the change. After a career year in the 2026-27 campaign, he boosted his value ahead of the 2026 offseason. Denver would have liked to keep him, but the team apparently couldn’t meet the contract he wanted, which led to a sign-and-trade.
Cleveland is giving Watson a clean runway. He now steps into a lineup that already includes Donovan Mitchell, James Harden, Evan Mobley, and Jarrett Allen, and the Cavaliers have a clear opening for him at small forward.
For Denver, though, Watson had become much more than a trade chip. Since being drafted in 2022 as the final pick of the first round, he developed into a dependable rotation player and eventually a regular starter in the 2025-26 season.
His game kept growing on both ends, with offensive flashes paired with the kind of rim protection that made him valuable night after night. He finished with 14.6 points, 4.9 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 1.1 blocks per game.
Gordon, who has been one of Watson’s closest teammates and friends in Denver, sounded genuinely happy for him when asked about the move at a basketball camp.

Now the question is how Watson fits in Cleveland. The Cavaliers brought him in to fill a real need on the wing, and the expectations are obvious. He’ll be asked to make the most of a chance that should come with plenty of minutes and a team aiming to get past the Eastern Conference Finals stage.
