Cavs Keep Finding Painful New Ways To Blow Winnable Games

Despite an impressive start, the Cavaliers couldn't maintain their momentum as the Hawks capitalized on key weaknesses, leaving fans questioning player consistency and late-game execution.

The Cavaliers jumped on the Hawks early, building a 15-point cushion and looking like they might finally cruise to one of those rare easy nights. Instead, Cleveland let the game slip into familiar territory, and Atlanta’s big second quarter turned the night into a 114-111 loss.

James Harden was the engine for Cleveland’s offense, finishing with 24 points, four assists and five rebounds. He also got to the line nine times.

The start of the season has been uneven for him, and while he carried the scoring load here, the team still looks like it is working through some rust. For now, expectations for the 37-year-old may need to be dialed back a bit.

Donovan Mitchell had a rough shooting night and came up empty on two late chances to force overtime. He finished with 22 points, three rebounds and three assists, but the 7-for-19 line from the floor made it hard for Cleveland to fully cash in on his production. The Cavs are still waiting for that signature Mitchell moment this season, and this was a missed opportunity.

Evan Mobley posted 11 points, four rebounds, seven assists and a block, but the outside shot that popped so well against the Wizards never really showed up. He only took three threes and missed all of them. The seven assists actually led the team, but the rebounding and shooting were both inconsistent, which fits the up-and-down shape of his game right now.

Jarrett Allen gave Cleveland a stable night with 14 points, eight rebounds, an assist and two blocks. He did his usual work without much drama, though Onyeka Okongwu was a problem on the other side with 29 points and 12 rebounds. Allen stays dependable, even if he is not often the guy who blows the game open.

Sam Merrill supplied a quick offensive boost off the bench with 16 points, two rebounds and three assists. His shooting helped fuel Cleveland’s fast start, even if he cooled off later. Still, he led the reserves in scoring and gave the Cavs some needed punch.

Mario Hezonja added 10 points, six rebounds and two assists, and his second half helped keep Cleveland within striking distance. His active hands stood out defensively, and he brought some life to a group that has been too inconsistent.

Tyrese Proctor made the most of his chance, finishing with seven points, six rebounds and two assists. With Maleek Thomas injured, Proctor stepped in and gave the Cavs a useful third quarter.

He didn’t turn it over, and his size on the glass stood out. His length could make him a useful backcourt option against bigger teams.

Peyton Watson had a frustrating night with four points, four rebounds and three assists. He picked up five fouls, spent much of the third quarter on the bench because of foul trouble, and Cleveland was minus-10 in his minutes. In a game this close, that kind of night loomed large.

Jaylon Tyson finished with three points, six rebounds and one assist, but the Cavs needed more from him. His shooting and size would have mattered in a game like this, especially with Watson in trouble. Instead, Tyrese Proctor moved ahead of him in bench minutes.

Craig Porter Jr. barely got a look, logging only four minutes and finishing with no points, one rebound and no assists. He was passed by Proctor off the bench and did not have a meaningful impact.

All told, Cleveland got enough early to take control, but not enough across the full 48 minutes to hold off Atlanta. The second quarter swing proved costly, and the Cavs walked away with another game that got away.

Ty Jerome Just Gave Cavaliers Fans A Needed Breather

Ty Jeromes first rough night in Memphis offered Cavaliers fans a small dose of comfort after months of wondering what Cleveland gave up when he walked. Since leaving for the Grizzlies, Jerome has been one of the names fans have circled whenever his new team looks like it may have gotten the better end of the deal, so a quieter performance against Portland was bound to draw some attention back in Northeast Ohio.

He still helped Memphis come away with a win, which keeps the larger conversation from going away entirely, but the game did interrupt the easy momentum around his start with the Grizzlies. For Cavaliers fans, it was at least a reminder that the regret over letting Jerome leave does not have to grow every time he takes the floor. [Read more 🡒]

Cavaliers Keep Collapsing And Kenny Atkinson Has A Growing Problem

The Cavaliers uneven start has already given Kenny Atkinson plenty to sort through, and the latest setback only sharpened the concern. After the loss to Atlanta, Atkinson acknowledged that Cleveland has not been able to put together consistent stretches on either end, with the team repeatedly letting leads slip away early in the season.

What stands out most is how familiar the issues have become. Atkinson pointed to the same basic breakdowns that have haunted the Cavaliers in multiple games, especially around the defensive glass and the kind of lapses that turn a comfortable position into a scramble. With tougher matchups ahead, Cleveland is running out of time to turn those warning signs into clean, complete wins. [Read more 🡒]

Cavs Collapse Should Put Kenny Atkinson Under Fresh Scrutiny

The Cavaliers had built a 15-point cushion after the first quarter, only to watch Atlanta chip away and eventually take control in a game that exposed some familiar late-game frustrations. Cleveland still got scoring from James Harden, who led the way with 24 points, and Donovan Mitchell added 22, but the offensive production was not enough to cover for the way the game unraveled after the opening period.

What stood out most was the second-half defensive drop-off, along with the coaching choices that came under the microscope as the Hawks kept pressing. The loss leaves Kenny Atkinson facing a fresh round of scrutiny, especially with the Cavaliers unable to protect a strong start or steady things when the game tightened late. [Read more 🡒]
