The Cleveland Cavaliers may have their two most valuable trade chips sitting in plain sight.
NBA insider Andy Bailey of Bleacher Report doesn’t see Cleveland as a team with any “untouchable players” if the right deal comes along, even with Donovan Mitchell and Evan Mobley at the center of everything the franchise is building.
Cleveland doesn’t have much extra draft capital to work with, but Bailey pointed to the kind of return Mitchell and Mobley could command if the Cavaliers ever decided to listen. Mitchell, Bailey noted, is the more established scorer and could bring back a haul. He also left open the possibility that Mitchell may not even be the club’s top trade asset.
“Donovan Mitchell is the older of the two, but he's also more proven. His scoring could be worth a trade fortune to the right team. And he might not be the best trade asset on this team.”
Bailey also singled out Mobley as a player whose value remains high despite a quieter statistical stretch.
“Evan Mobley has sort of stagnated statistically, but he's still in his early 20s, has a Defensive Player of the Year on his resume and has plenty of untapped offensive potential.”
Mitchell has been in Cleveland since the team acquired him from the Utah Jazz in 2022, and he has delivered big numbers in a Cavaliers uniform. He’s averaging 26.7 points per game in the regular season and 27.3 points per game in the playoffs.
A seven-time All-Star, Mitchell helped push Cleveland to the Eastern Conference Finals last season, the franchise’s first trip there without LeBron James since 1992. The run ended with the New York Knicks sweeping the Cavaliers en route to winning the championship against the San Antonio Spurs.
The biggest move Cleveland made this summer was locking Mitchell in with a four-year, $273 million maximum contract extension.
Mobley is currently on a five-year, $269 million deal, and the Cavaliers reportedly weren’t willing to include him in a package to land Giannis Antetokounmpo from the Milwaukee Bucks. If Cleveland ever chooses to reset, Bailey’s view is clear: Mobley would be the kind of player to move for picks.
