Ben Simmons and the Cavaliers are not connected in any reported way, but that hasn’t stopped Cavs fans from weighing in on the idea.
RealCavsFans.com recently asked followers whether they would take Simmons on a training camp invite with a chance to earn a roster spot. The response was close, but it leaned yes: out of 757 votes cast, 54.2 percent backed the move, while 45.8 percent said no. The poll was still open as of late Monday.
Simmons, 30, did not play in the NBA last season. He has, though, continued to signal that he wants another shot, posting on Instagram earlier this month that he is “ready for wherever this goes” after spending much of the past year working to get his body healthy following recurring back problems.
There was a time when Simmons’ résumé looked very different. He was a three-time All-Star, an All-NBA selection and a two-time first-team All-Defensive player. That version of him is not the one anyone should be expecting now.
Even so, a camp invite would not ask Cleveland to commit to much. Simmons is still a 6-foot-10 passer, defender and rebounder with real value if he’s put in the right spots. Surrounded by shooters, used to guard multiple positions and asked to move the ball, he could fit as a low-risk end-of-roster experiment.
The catch, of course, is the shooting. Just don’t ask him to do that.
Simmons has mentioned Philadelphia and Miami as possible landing spots, though there does not seem to be much momentum behind a return to the 76ers. For Cleveland, there’s no reported link at all. Still, a slim majority of Cavs fans appear willing to at least consider the flier.
