Cleveland has given its fans enough to smile about this preseason, but the real test hasn’t even started yet.
The Cavaliers have fresh faces, young players generating buzz and plenty of social media juice to go around. Meleek Thomas has become part of the excitement.
Jaylon Tyson has also put himself in the spotlight with encouraging preseason work, and Spencer Davies has praised Tyson’s performances. Watson has even supplied the kind of athletic pop that gets shared everywhere, thanks to an emphatic dunk that piled up thousands of likes.
That kind of noise is easy to understand. For a fan base hungry for signs that the team is moving in the right direction, it’s hard not to lean into the optimism. Even with some uncertainty still hanging over things, it’s still a good day to be a fan of the 216.
But the hype only goes so far.
The Cavaliers aren’t trying to be fun. They’re trying to be a championship team.
And after another postseason ended without a trip to the NBA Finals, the question that matters most isn’t whether Cleveland looks promising in the preseason. It’s whether this group is actually improving where the games get serious.
That’s where the useful caution comes in. Preseason basketball can show flashes, but it can also hide problems.
New lineups, unfamiliar combinations and players trying to carve out roles can make a team look sharper than it really is. So yes, Cleveland has looked more versatile, and yes, there’s legitimate reason to think the roster has more depth than it did a year ago.
Mario Hezonja is part of that intrigue, too.
Still, the evidence that matters won’t come from highlights.
Davies also pointed to Cleveland’s ball security in an exhibition, and while that alone doesn’t prove much, it’s the kind of detail that deserves attention. A team with Donovan Mitchell and James Harden can’t afford to waste its own offense with sloppy possessions. And that’s only one part of the picture.
The bigger questions are still waiting. Can Harden and Mitchell form an offensive partnership that still works when defenses know what’s coming?
Can Evan Mobley take on a bigger offensive role and make more decisions with the ball? Can Kenny Atkinson find reliable combinations once the rotation tightens and every possession starts carrying more weight?
Cleveland’s 2026 Eastern Conference Finals run showed the Cavaliers belong in the postseason mix. The sweep at the hands of the New York Knicks showed something else: getting there is not the same thing as breaking through.
That’s why the chatter about prime Donovan Mitchell and at least some version of MVP Harden keeps hanging over the conversation, especially with Cleveland’s championship odds still drawing skepticism. The regular season will give the Cavaliers chances to sharpen things up. The playoffs will tell the truth about whether that progress actually means something.
There is real reason for optimism here. Mitchell remains a dangerous scorer.
Harden can still steer an offense. Mobley’s growth could raise the ceiling, and Jarrett Allen gives the team a strong defensive base.
If reliable contributors emerge, Atkinson will have more to work with than he did last postseason.
But more options don’t automatically equal better answers. The Cavaliers still have to prove they can value possessions, adjust when the first plan gets shut down and stay disciplined on defense against top-level competition. They also have to figure out who earns trust when things get tight and uncomfortable.
So yes, enjoy the dunks. Enjoy the young guys. Enjoy the possibility.
Just don’t confuse preseason energy with proof. Cleveland doesn’t need to win the October buzz battle.

Cavaliers Season Could End In A Shakeup Cleveland Dreads
The Cavaliers are heading into the kind of season that always comes with layered expectations in Cleveland, where anything less than a true playoff push tends to get judged against bigger ambitions. The core has enough talent to make the conversation feel real, with Donovan Mitchell and Evan Mobley at the center and Jarrett Allen still shaping the teams identity on both ends.
But the other side of that coin is what makes this such a uneasy projection for the franchise. If the season goes sideways early, the pressure would not stop at the roster, and the questions could spill onto the bench as well, leaving Cleveland to weigh changes it would much rather avoid. For now it is all hypothetical, but the margin between a celebrated run and a summer of hard decisions does not look especially wide. [Read more 🡒]
LeBrons 24th Season Puts His NBA Longevity In Wild Perspective
LeBron James is about to enter his 24th NBA season, a mark that stands alone in league history and says almost as much about time as it does about greatness. For Cavaliers fans, it is another reminder of just how long James has been looming over the sport, still active while an entire wave of current prospects and young pros has come and gone in his wake.
The generational gap around him keeps getting harder to ignore. A number of notable players already in the NBA, or on the rise toward it, were not even born when James made his debut in 2003, which is the kind of detail that turns an otherwise routine season-opening note into something much bigger. And with James still adding to that ledger, the question is less about whether he has outlasted his peers than how much longer this unusual run can keep stretching the leagues timeline. [Read more 🡒]
Jarrett Allens Status Just Put Clevelands Opener On Edge
The Cavaliers frontcourt picture got a lot murkier just as the season is about to begin. Jarrett Allen is listed as questionable for the opener against the 76ers because of right patellar tendinopathy, and Cleveland is already working through how it might shuffle the rotation if he cant go.
The concern is compounded by the rest of the depth chart, with NaeQwan Tomlin and Khalifa Diop both ruled out. For a team that leans on Allen to anchor the middle, the timing is far from ideal, and it leaves Kenny Atkinson with fewer center and frontcourt options as he prepares for Philadelphia.
