The Cleveland Cavaliers are banking on their bold move at the trade deadline, swapping Darius Garland for James Harden, to stave off a potential roster overhaul this summer. The aim?
To avoid another early playoff exit that could force the team into a rebuild. As Zach Lowe mentioned on The Bill Simmons Podcast, the Cavaliers' offseason could become quite intriguing if they fall short again.
The front office is particularly wary of losing Donovan Mitchell, which partly drove the decision to trade Garland for Harden. Garland's limited playtime and the lack of chemistry in the backcourt made the swap a necessary gamble. Harden's track record in elimination games is a concern, but Cleveland felt compelled to shake things up.
Cavaliers Eyeing a Deep Playoff Run
Cleveland is eager to shed the shadow of past playoff disappointments. With Mitchell, they've struggled to break past the second round for three consecutive years.
This postseason could be a pivotal moment, especially with Mitchell's future in play as he becomes eligible for an extension this summer. His player option in 2027 looms large, potentially making this the Cavaliers' last shot at a championship run with him.
Alternatively, Cleveland might persuade Mitchell to stay longer by pursuing a trade for Giannis Antetokounmpo. For that to happen, Giannis would need to signal his intention not to extend with the Bucks, prompting Milwaukee to consider trading their franchise star.
While Cleveland may not have the same emotional ties to Mitchell as Milwaukee does with Antetokounmpo, they acquired him with high hopes back in 2022. The expectation was to contend for conference finals, not to settle for early exits.
If the Cavaliers fail to make a significant postseason impact, as Lowe hinted, the offseason could bring unexpected changes for Cleveland, and not necessarily the kind fans would wish for.
