Todd Monken, the new head coach of the Cleveland Browns, is already making waves with his straightforward approach. In his second press conference, Monken didn't hold back when discussing the Browns' quarterback situation, providing fans with some intriguing insights.
When asked about the quarterback competition, Monken was clear: "Sure, I think it’s an open competition. I don’t know why it wouldn’t be." This comment quickly caught fire on social media, as it suggests a shake-up could be on the horizon.
Monken elaborated on the situation, hinting at the possibility of an external free agent like Malik Willis joining the team. However, his comments leaned towards a firm no on that front, emphasizing the current roster.
He expressed a desire to have a starting quarterback named by training camp, saying, "You would hope that by the time you get to training camp that the reps you’re giving to a quarterback is for your starter." Yet, he acknowledged that this decision would unfold as the offseason progresses.
Monken’s candidness extended to the lack of a clear starter, stating, "I don’t think there’s enough on film over the last couple of years one way or the other to say, ‘Boy, we have a starter at quarterback,’ yet, whether internally or externally."
This leaves the door open for Shedeur Sanders, Deshaun Watson, and Dillon Gabriel to compete for the QB1 spot. Monken praised Sanders but noted he still has some development ahead. Watson, too, will have the opportunity to prove himself during the offseason.
For Browns fans, the prospect of a Sanders vs. Watson showdown may not be thrilling, but it seems to be the direction the team is heading. Monken’s no-nonsense style is a departure from previous years, and his words should be taken seriously as the team gears up for the new league year.
