Quinshon Judkins’ summer has had a little more uncertainty than the Browns would like, but the latest word out of Cleveland points toward a player who is expected to be ready when it matters most.
First-year head coach Todd Monken said Judkins’ absence from practice this week is only precautionary. Monken also told reporters he does not expect the running back to miss the season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Monken has been tight-lipped about the specifics, but the message around Judkins is more encouraging than alarming as the regular season approaches. The Browns are still navigating a new era after trading away franchise cornerstone Myles Garrett, and they’re counting on young talent to carry the load. On offense, that includes Shedeur Sanders, Harold Fannin Jr. and Judkins, who all flashed during promising rookie seasons in 2025.
Judkins’ rookie year already showed why Cleveland is leaning on him. He finished as RB26 in PPR formats and averaged 12.1 points per week, production that made him a useful fantasy option right away. Over 14 starts, he totaled 827 rushing yards and seven touchdowns on 230 carries, while adding 26 catches for 171 receiving yards across 36 touches.
Even with the recent missed practice time, Judkins remains positioned as Cleveland’s lead back heading into 2026. He’s being drafted outside the top three rounds in most leagues, with a real-time ADP of 46.4 and an RB21 ranking in PPR. That price leaves plenty of room for profit if he takes the expected second-year jump.
There’s also a clear path for him to beat that number. Judkins averaged 3.6 yards per carry in 2025, and if that efficiency climbs behind a reworked offensive line, a first 1,000-yard rushing season is well within reach given his workload.
Judkins’ preseason usage has already shown how central he is to the Browns’ plans, and the current injury update doesn’t seem to change the bigger picture. Cleveland still views him as its RB1, and fantasy managers have every reason to keep him on the radar as a player with a strong floor and real breakout potential.

Browns Offense Finally Showed Something Fans Have Been Waiting For
A joint practice against the Bills gave the Browns a chance to measure themselves against another roster, and for once the offense came away with something to build on. Head coach Todd Monken said Cleveland looked like it belonged on the field, a notable step for a group that has spent much of camp trying to find its footing. There were still mistakes and some injuries to sort through, but the overall impression was more encouraging than the usual late-summer noise around an offense still trying to settle in.
The offensive line also showed progress, which matters just as much as any flashier moment in practice because it sets the tone for everything else. Cleveland still has a long way to go before anyone can draw conclusions about the season opener, but this was the kind of day that can hint at a unit starting to mesh. For a Browns team looking for signs of cohesion, it was at least a reminder that the offense may be moving in the right direction. [Read more 🡒]
Browns Quarterback Uncertainty Could Put Rival Cutdown Decision In Focus
After the first week of preseason, Cleveland still does not have a clear answer under center for 2026, and that uncertainty is starting to frame everything the Browns do at quarterback. Shedeur Sanders, Deshaun Watson and the rest of the room have all had uneven moments, leaving the team with more questions than answers as the evaluation process continues into the rest of August.
Across the state line, Pittsburghs own quarterback decision has become a subplot worth watching, with Mason Rudolph, Will Howard and Drew Allar all tied to the Steelers roster picture. Howard, a former Ohio State quarterback, made a strong preseason debut and is now the kind of player Cleveland could have in mind if he ends up available, giving the Browns one more possible name to monitor while their own competition remains unsettled. Browns Preseason Is Already Shaking Up Several Key Position Battles
Spring practices and the early run of preseason work have already started to move a few Cleveland Browns players into more visible spots on the depth chart. Rookies and other younger pieces have taken advantage of the chance to show up in camp, with names like Mascarenas-Arnold, Fano, Barber, Ryan, Concepcion and Boston all surfacing as players worth watching as the roster starts to take shape.
For a team still sorting out several key position battles, that kind of movement matters more than a typical August flash. The Browns have not made any official decisions yet, but the early signs suggest there are real opportunities for players who keep stacking good practices and preseason snaps, and plenty of eyes will stay on how those open competitions settle in the weeks ahead.
