Cleveland Browns fans are buzzing with trade rumors surrounding their star defensive end, Myles Garrett, for the second offseason in a row. Garrett, who just set a new single-season record with 23 sacks, is coming off a stellar year that also saw him notch 60 tackles, 39 QB hits, 33 tackles for loss, and three forced fumbles. His performance was nothing short of dominant, earning him the Defensive Player of the Year title.
Despite being under contract until 2030, some voices in the NFL community are suggesting that Garrett should be on the trade block. On a recent episode of ESPN's “Get Up,” former NFL general manager Mike Tannenbaum proposed a bold move: trading Garrett to the Detroit Lions in exchange for two first-round picks and wide receiver Jameson Williams. Tannenbaum believes this could kickstart a significant rebuild for the Browns, stating, “You need so many weapons, you have so many holes to fill.”
However, this idea hasn't exactly won over the Cleveland faithful. Many fans are dismissing the proposal as unrealistic.
One fan sarcastically remarked, “The Browns cannot refuse this imaginary offer. Listen to me because I was such a successful GM,” highlighting the potential financial pitfalls, including a hefty dead cap hit.
Another fan chimed in, arguing that Garrett’s value is worth more than the proposed deal, suggesting it would take at least three first-round picks. Social media is rife with similar sentiments, with some fans insisting that the Browns should stop entertaining such trade talks altogether.
Financially, trading Garrett before June 1 would saddle the Browns with $40.818 million in dead money, actually reducing their cap space. Even a post-June 1 trade wouldn’t alleviate these financial concerns. Given Garrett’s exceptional performance and the potential backlash from fans, Cleveland has little incentive to part ways with their defensive cornerstone.
As the NFL’s new league year approaches on March 11, any speculation about Garrett’s future remains just that-speculation. For now, it seems the Browns and their fans are more focused on keeping their defensive powerhouse right where he belongs.
