The Browns are staring down roster cuts this weekend, and Luke Floriea has done everything possible to make that decision uncomfortable.
For Cleveland, he’s the kind of local story that naturally grabs attention. Floriea grew up just outside the city, starred at Mentor High School for the Cardinals, then stayed close to home at Kent State.
But this isn’t just about geography or feel-good appeal. He earned real production this summer, and that’s what makes his case hard to ignore.
Floriea entered the league as an undrafted player in 2025 and landed on the Browns’ 90-man roster after trying out at rookie minicamp. His first run with the team got derailed fast when a serious hamstring injury hit in the preseason opener. Cleveland waived him with an injury designation, and he eventually found his way back to the practice squad in September.
This preseason, though, Floriea made a much stronger push. He finished with three touchdowns, including two in the final preseason game, and added 95 yards on six catches. Both Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel found him in the passing game, and Floriea kept stacking plays whenever the Browns gave him a chance.
The competition around him has been real. Gage Larvadain and Malachi Corley were also in the mix at receiver, and both have the edge when it comes to special teams. Floriea doesn’t have the usual build of a special-teams specialist, which matters in roster math.
Larvadain handled punt return work in the preseason, but the results were rough, especially against the Patriots, when he finished with minus-3 yards on two returns. Corley’s situation is different.
He played in 13 games for Cleveland in 2025, didn’t put up eye-catching receiving numbers in the 2026 preseason with two catches for 27 yards, but he is listed as the first-team kick returner. That could be the detail that keeps him in front of Floriea.
Still, the Browns shouldn’t let a narrow roster formula bury what Floriea actually did on the field. Cleveland is reworking its roster and trying to set a new tone after the Myles Garrett trade, and rewarding performance would be an easy way to reinforce that message.
Floriea said after catching two touchdowns in the Browns’ 37-13 win over the Patriots, "I feel like I did everything I could. I have no regrets."

That’s the heart of this case. Floriea is a hometown name, sure, but he’s also a player who has earned every bit of his path. If Cleveland is serious about making the 53-man roster a merit-based reward, Floriea belongs on it.
