That’s why the team’s connection to Joe Thomas keeps coming back into the conversation. Both head coach Todd Monken and offensive line coach George Warhop spoke highly of the Hall of Fame left tackle on Thursday, pointing to the kind of knowledge and perspective he can still pass along to the current group.
Warhop didn’t hide how much value he sees in Thomas as a teaching tool for the linemen. He said, “if any of those guys can talk to Joe it’s a great resource…Joe was the ultimate pro, great work ethic, great study habits, fantastic notes, can watch tape…my last few years here, he and Alex Mack would split the room and watch tape with them so they could understand how they watch tape.”
He also made his point even more directly, saying, “if I’m a lineman here and I’m a tackle here and I don’t reach out to Joe (Thomas), I’m a dumbass.”
Monken had a similar message. He said that when he was interviewing for the job and after he got it, he reached out to Thomas and told him, “we have a spot for you if you want to help us coach…he said I would love to coach but I don’t think I want to commit to an everyday contract.”
Monken added that Thomas is welcome around the team whenever he wants, including at training camp or any practice, to help the offensive linemen however he can.
The Browns clearly see Thomas as more than a former star. His presence still carries weight inside the building, and the staff believes his experience can help a group that was a major offseason priority. Cleveland added pieces in free agency and the 2026 NFL Draft, and the line looks stronger on paper than it did a year ago.
With a little under a month left before the final roster decisions are made, every bit of instruction matters. For the Browns’ linemen, learning from Joe Thomas could be one of the most valuable edges they get before September.
