Jerry Jeudy's Bold Move Could Transform the Browns' Offense

Cleveland Browns explore budget-friendly moves to bolster their receiving corps as doubts rise about Jerry Jeudy's top receiver role.

The Cleveland Browns made a bold move in 2025 by attempting to replace Amari Cooper with Jerry Jeudy as their top wide receiver. Initially, it looked like Jeudy, a former Denver Broncos first-round pick, was ready to step up as the team's WR1. However, last season’s performance has left many questioning that decision.

The Browns boast a roster filled with young talent at wide receiver, but they lack a true standout pass catcher. While this year’s free-agency pool isn't brimming with elite options, there are still valuable players available for supporting roles.

Enter Darnell Mooney, who might just be the perfect fit for the Browns. With the Atlanta Falcons likely moving on from Mooney, the Browns should seriously consider adding him to their lineup.

Mooney as a Cost-Effective WR2

Darnell Mooney is projected to command a two-year, $15.1 million contract, averaging about $7.5 million annually. The Browns currently have just $1.87 million in available cap space, but with potential post-June 1 adjustments, they might find room to maneuver.

Mooney is a savvy receiver with dependable hands, despite an uncharacteristic six drops last season. Over his career, he’s posted drop rates ranging from 2.4 to 7.2 percent, making last year’s 15.8 percent an anomaly.

Known for his versatility, Mooney excels as both a deep threat and a slot receiver. His impressive route-running skills and ability to gain yards after the catch make him a valuable asset. He’s proven he can handle a heavy workload, with at least 60 receptions in three seasons and over 100 targets in two.

Consistency has been a challenge, with Mooney alternating between strong performances and quieter stretches. However, his 14.4 average depth of target last season ranked eighth in the league, aligning well with Todd Monken's explosive passing strategy.

While Mooney may not be a long-term solution, the Browns need experienced players to complement their younger talent, like Isaiah Bond, as they develop.

Looking Ahead

The Browns are unlikely to pursue Jauan Jennings, especially after last year’s issues with Shelby Harris post-Maliek Collins’ injury. Big contracts for aging stars like Stefon Diggs, Tyreek Hill, or Deebo Samuel could be too risky. Therefore, focusing on a solid supporting player like Mooney, while scouting for a No. 1 option in the NFL Draft or through a trade, seems wise.

Currently, the Browns might have to stick with Jerry Jeudy for a bit longer, with Harold Fannin Jr. as a primary target. However, adding Mooney and a first-round wide receiver could significantly raise the floor of their passing game, which should be Monken's top priority.
