Devin Bush Stuns Browns with Soaring Demand Ahead of Free Agency

Cleveland Browns face a financial balancing act as Devin Bush's impressive season elevates his market value ahead of crucial free agency decisions.

As the NFL's legal tampering window for 2026 free agents approaches, the Cleveland Browns find themselves in a tricky situation with linebacker Devin Bush, a player who's sure to attract plenty of attention.

Bush, who ranks in the top 30 of The Athletic’s 2026 free-agent list, had a standout season. Playing alongside rookie sensation Carson Schwesinger, Bush racked up 125 tackles and returned two of his three interceptions for touchdowns. After being the No. 10 overall pick by the Steelers in 2019, he’s made a strong comeback, especially after signing a one-year, $3.25 million deal with the Browns in 2025.

Zac Jackson, a Browns insider, believes Bush is poised for a big payday. The Browns, ideally, would love to keep him to strengthen Mike Rutenberg’s defense, but their current cap situation complicates matters.

Much like the Chiefs' recent restructuring of Patrick Mahomes' contract, Browns GM Andrew Berry is expected to adjust Deshaun Watson’s contract to free up around $35 million in cap space. This move is crucial as the Browns aim to address key needs, particularly on offense, including positions like the offensive line, wide receiver, and even quarterback.

With Schwesinger secured on a rookie deal until 2028, the Browns might have to make tough choices on defense. Letting Bush walk could be one of those decisions, especially if they aim to revamp their offense in the upcoming draft and free agency. They have 10 draft picks and could target a new linebacker there, while also considering a bold quarterback move with Malik Willis or strengthening their O-line alongside Joel Bitonio.

Spotrac projects Bush could command around $9 million annually on a new deal, a sum the Browns might prefer to allocate towards offensive improvements. As a result, despite his impressive 2025 performance, Bush might be heading to a new team come March.
