Deshaun Watson’s concussion scare has already moved the market for Cleveland’s Week 9 trip to New Orleans.
The Browns quarterback was placed in concussion protocol after reporting symptoms on Tuesday, two days after taking a heavy hit in the first quarter of Sunday’s loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Watson had been cleared to return to that game, but the issue surfaced later, and now his status for Sunday is very much up in the air.
That uncertainty pushed Cleveland from a 2.5-point underdog to a 3-point underdog against the Saints.
The line move leaves bettors with a simple question: is this a sign Watson still has a chance to suit up, or does it reflect how close the gap is between him and backup Shedeur Sanders? Sanders briefly played in Week 8 against Pittsburgh, and he started several games as a rookie during the 2025 season.
Watson’s absence would come at a time when the Browns are still in the thick of things. Cleveland is 5-3 and has leaned on Watson’s late-game work, with the quarterback engineering five fourth-quarter comebacks to help keep the team in the AFC playoff race. Even after the loss to Pittsburgh, Cleveland’s playoff chances improved with Lamar Jackson sidelined for the Baltimore Ravens.
New Orleans, meanwhile, comes out of its bye at 2-5 and is trying to stay alive in the NFC South chase. The Saints have been shut out at home in the standings so far, going 0-4 straight up in New Orleans, which is part of why the Browns may still draw interest against the spread even if Watson can’t go.
Through eight games in 2026, Watson has completed 65.5 percent of his passes for 1,806 yards, seven touchdowns and three interceptions. He has also rushed 51 times for 217 yards and a score. He hasn’t looked like the version of himself from his Houston Texans days, but Cleveland has clearly treated him as its best quarterback option this season.
For now, Watson should be considered highly questionable for Sunday. He has to clear concussion protocol before he has any chance to play.

Browns Roster Shuffle Brings Back A Name Fans May Recognize
The Browns kept the practice squad moving with another round of roster tweaks, waiving wide receiver Bub Means, punter Wes Pahl, guard Vershon Lee and tackle Andrew Coker while adding three new names to fill the openings. Cleveland signed wide receiver Xavier Guillory, guard Austin Blaske and tackle Xavier Truss, continuing the kind of weekly churn that often defines the back end of an NFL roster.
Truss is the familiar name in the group for Browns fans who follow college football closely, since he played at Georgia before getting NFL looks with multiple teams. For Cleveland, the addition gives the team another offensive line option to evaluate as it sorts through depth and development on the practice squad, even if the bigger question is how quickly any of these moves can translate into real value down the stretch. Browns Are Suddenly Tied To A Franchise Shaking QB Debate
A rough start in Los Angeles has quickly turned Justin Herbert into one of the most intriguing names in the early-season quarterback chatter, and the Browns have been pulled into the conversation almost immediately. With ESPN Cleveland among those floating the idea, Cleveland is being mentioned as a possible suitor if the Chargers ever seriously entertain a move, even though any deal would come with a massive price tag and a complicated fit for a team that has already committed heavily at the position.
For the Browns, the appeal is obvious enough to understand even if the logistics are daunting. Herbert would represent a major swing at a franchise-changing quarterback, but the cost would be steep and the optics would be messy given the investment already made in Deshaun Watson. For now, it remains only speculation, but it is the kind of speculation that can linger around Cleveland whenever a big-name passer suddenly becomes available in the rumor mill. [Read more 🡒]
Browns Suddenly Face A Huge QB Test At The Worst Time
A late-week quarterback change has put the Browns in an awkward spot at a time when they can least afford it. Deshaun Watson entered the NFL concussion protocol after reporting symptoms following a helmet-to-helmet hit in the recent game, leaving Cleveland to prepare as if it will have to turn to Shedeur Sanders for his first start of the 2026 season against the Saints.
For a team sitting at 5-3 and trying to stay in the thick of the playoff race, the timing is as tricky as the matchup itself. The Browns have spent much of the season trying to build momentum, and now they may have to do it with a backup under center while Watson works through the league's protocol and the team waits for clarity on what comes next.
