Cleveland Browns fans got a rough first look at Deshaun Watson’s return, and it didn’t take long for the night to go sideways. On his first drive back after not playing since 2024, Watson threw an interception, and the game never really recovered for Cleveland in a 34-10 loss.
There were a couple of bright spots on the stat sheet if you want to squint hard enough. Watson finished with 205 passing yards and a touchdown, and the scoring throw to Denzel Boston was a beauty. But it came late, long after the outcome was settled, which is why the numbers still read like empty calories by NFL standards.
The bigger problem for Cleveland was that Watson’s rough outing still left the Browns with the same uncomfortable answer at quarterback. Head coach Todd Monken made it clear Watson gave the team the best option to win. That leaves the Browns in a tough spot, because turning to Shedeur Sanders would only invite the question of how Sanders is supposed to fare if he couldn’t be better than what Watson showed Sunday.
So for now, Watson remains the guy, even after a game that offered plenty of reasons for frustration. The Browns managed only 10 points, and Watson never looked settled until garbage time, when the Jacksonville defense may have eased up a bit.
His late touchdown at least put a solid throw on film and hinted that some of the old ability is still there. But the overall picture was brutal: a lopsided loss, a shaky performance, and no obvious escape hatch.
It also wasn’t fair to pin everything on Watson alone. The Browns defense looked like a shell of its 2025 self, with Jacksonville receivers finding space all over the secondary while Trevor Lawrence threw four touchdowns. Mason Graham was the only Browns defender to record a sack, and Jared Verse didn’t live up to the expectations that followed him out of the Myles Garrett trade.
Everything about the night felt broken. The offense was stagnant and erratic, the defense had holes everywhere, and the head coach rubbed salt in the wound by kicking a field goal while down 31-0. A shutout might have forced a quarterback change, for better or worse.
Instead, Cleveland heads back to Florida to face Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Mayfield will have plenty to play for, and plenty of Browns fans may be pulling for him to get it done.
