Deshaun Watson’s return to the regular season came with a bad opening, a worse stat line, and one sideline moment that took over the conversation almost immediately.
Cleveland sent Watson out as its Week 1 starter in Jacksonville, and the Browns were already down 6-0 with 1:42 left in the first quarter when CBS cameras caught him on the sideline wiping his visor after two early turnovers. The clip spread fast after John Frascella posted it, with the caption: “Deshaun Watson thinks his VISOR is the problem. You can’t make this s-t up, anymore.”
By then, the damage was already piling up. Watson had opened 4-of-6 for 29 yards and an interception before the Browns dug themselves in deeper.
Beacon Journal tracking had him at 3-of-5 for 24 yards and a pick in the first quarter, and he was sacked twice by halftime. Through two quarters, he was 8-of-13 for 75 yards and a 45.4 rating.
The visor wipe became the moment everyone seized on. Cruz Oxenreider summed up the reaction this way: “Deshaun Watson is cleaning his visor after 2 turnovers like that was the problem all along.”

Lowe wrote: “The only reason to keep playing Deshaun Watson is to guarantee that you will have the worst record possible. The Browns might engage in investigation-worthy tanking if they keep playing him.”
Emmanuel Acho also highlighted the second-possession turnover live: “Deshaun Watson may not finish this game man… his second possession ends with the ball in a Jag’s defender’s chest!”
And Andrew Fillipponi fired off his own shot after the first interception: “Deshaun Watson in midseason form. Throws pick on 1st drive.
Worst contract and worst trade in NFL history. What an incompetent franchise.”
Even before the game had really gone off the rails, Alex Smith had gone hard on ESPN Sunday NFL Countdown: “It’s so delusional. How out of touch do you have to be if you’re Deshaun? What have you done to give this fan base to cheer for?”
Watson’s start did not come out of nowhere. He has played 19 games since the $230 million guarantee, and Cleveland still handed him the job over Sanders after a messy camp and a preseason rant at his own fans.
Monken later said Watson was not in a great headspace after those boos. Watson said the reaction felt personal.
He wanted the focus to stay on football. Instead, the football brought a pick, a fumble, two sacks and a visor wipe while Jacksonville kept rolling and Cleveland kept staring at the sideline.
The clip is the one that will travel. Shedeur Sanders is dressed and waiting for his chance.
