Deshaun Watson’s third Browns season opener comes with the kind of attention that can swallow a quarterback whole.
When Cleveland opens the 2026 regular season on the road against Jacksonville, Watson will tie Baker Mayfield for the most Week 1 starts by a Browns quarterback since 1999. It also marks his fifth and final year under contract in Cleveland, and he arrives at the opener still trying to revive a career that has stalled badly in the numbers that matter most: nine wins as a starter over the last four years, and 13 over the last six when his Texans days are included.
The Browns spent the summer sorting through a quarterback battle that Watson ultimately won, after owner Jimmy Haslam had essentially brushed him aside a year and a half ago with his “swing and a miss” comments. Now the focus shifts to whether Watson can justify the job and push Cleveland back toward relevance.
For Watson, the cleanest version of a Week 1 statement would be a Browns blowout. That would mean something along the lines of his 2019 performance for Houston against Atlanta, when he threw for 426 yards and five touchdowns and posted a perfect 158.3 passer rating. With Cleveland’s rebuilt offensive line and revamped receiver group, that kind of explosion feels unlikely.
The more realistic path is a tight finish decided late, with Watson guiding a game-winning drive to steal a road victory from the reigning AFC South champion. For that to happen, the Browns defense would need to do plenty of heavy lifting, and head coach Todd Monken would have to manage the game well around his quarterback.
Either way, a win in Jacksonville would give Cleveland a useful burst of momentum heading into another road test in Week 2 against the Buccaneers.
Watson, though, is not in danger of being benched if things go sideways early. Barring an injury or a Jim Hardy-like eight-interception performance against the Jaguars, he is expected to stay on the field instead of giving way to Shedeur Sanders.
Turnovers have been a concern throughout training camp and the preseason, even if the coaching staff tried to downplay them. If Watson turns the ball over multiple times in Week 1, that will instantly become a “told you so” moment for a fanbase that never embraced his promotion to starter.
He also has to deal with the crowd. Watson went through a rough preseason moment against his own booing fans, and that alone gives Jaguars fans reason to believe the boos bother him more than he lets on. If Jacksonville gets under his skin on Sunday, the noise could follow him all season, at home and on the road.
Cleveland enters the game as an +8.5 underdog, so a loss would not exactly be a shock. But the way Watson plays will matter. If he ends up carrying a major share of the blame, both local and national outlets will have plenty to work with.
