The Browns opened the 2026 season with a 34-10 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, and one of the few bright spots came from a rookie making his NFL debut.
Second-round pick Denzel Boston led Cleveland’s receivers in Week 1 and finished with the team’s only touchdown. It came late in the fourth quarter, well after the game had tilted firmly in Jacksonville’s direction, but it still earned Boston a place in Browns history.
Boston became just the fourth receiver in Browns history to post 50-plus receiving yards and a receiving touchdown in his NFL debut. The list now reads: Denzel Boston (9/13/26 v.

That kind of start has been rare in Cleveland, and Boston’s debut stood out even though he did not lead the team in targets or catches. The Browns waited until the fourth quarter to really test Jacksonville deep, and Deshaun Watson finally had time in a clean pocket to launch a 46-yard pass that Boston hauled in at the back of the end zone against tight coverage.
The touchdown was garbage time, but the play still showed why Cleveland used a second-round pick on him. Boston flashed the traits that made him such an intriguing college prospect, and the Browns’ offense could use that kind of pop.
There’s also a larger issue hanging over the receiving group. Watson’s numbers are going to affect production for players like Boston, and if his play doesn’t improve in the next week or two, a quarterback change may come into the conversation. The Browns can’t afford to waste rookie opportunities, and getting Boston as many chances as possible should be part of the plan.
For one game, at least, Boston gave Cleveland something to build on. And for a franchise that hasn’t seen many rookie receivers start this way, that’s enough to stand out.
