Browns Stun Fans by Letting Promising Young Talent Walk in Free Agency

The Browns' puzzling decision to let Mohamoud Diabate walk raises critical questions about their defensive strategy and roster depth.

The Cleveland Browns are facing some pressing needs on offense as they look ahead to the 2026 season. It's not a stretch to say they could use reinforcements at nearly every position on that side of the ball. But let's not overlook a brewing issue on defense, which became more pronounced after a recent departure in free agency.

The Browns decided not to tender restricted free agent Mohamoud Diabate, and as reported by Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the 24-year-old linebacker has signed with the Tennessee Titans. This move by GM Andrew Berry raises eyebrows, especially since the Browns had a handful of restricted free agents and chose only to tender safety Ronnie Hickman.

While Diabate wasn't necessarily a top priority, he did start 11 games in 2024 and another six last season. The Browns aren't exactly overflowing with depth at inside linebacker, making this decision even more puzzling.

Currently, the Browns have traded Devin Bush for Quincy Williams at the off-ball linebacker position. They are fortunate to have Carson Schwesinger, the reigning Defensive Rookie of the Year, leading the group. However, the depth behind him is concerning.

Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah's health remains uncertain after a serious neck injury in 2024. As it stands, the Browns are left with special teamer Easton Mascarenas-Arnold and three other players-Edefuan Ulofoshio, Nathaniel Watson, and Winston Reid-who didn't see any action in 2025. This leaves a significant gap behind Schwesinger and Williams.

While it's unlikely the Browns will use their No. 6 overall draft pick on Ohio State linebacker Sonny Styles, nothing is off the table with Berry at the helm. A more likely scenario is that the Browns will select a linebacker for the third year in a row during the draft.

With nine picks in hand, addressing needs at offensive tackle and wide receiver will be a priority, but linebacker should also be high on the list. Prospects like Georgia's CJ Allen and Texas Tech's Jacob Rodriguez could be in their sights as early as Day 2.

Diabate's production may have dipped towards the end of 2024, and his role diminished in 2025. Yet, he remains a young talent the Browns have been nurturing since his days as an undrafted rookie. Letting him walk for what would likely be a budget-friendly deal leaves fans scratching their heads.
