The Browns may have taken another hit at the exact spot they could least afford it.
Rookie cornerback Michael Coats Jr., one of the bright spots of Cleveland’s training camp, was injured during Tuesday’s practice after coming down awkwardly on his ankle while trying to make a play in coverage. He had to be helped off the field and was later carted off, a development that immediately raised concerns about how much time he might miss.
Coats had spent camp turning heads. The undrafted free agent from West Virginia was active, disruptive and around the ball enough to record an interception in Week 1 of the preseason against the Chicago Bears. That stretch of play had pushed him into serious roster consideration and, more notably, into position as the Browns’ No. 3 boundary cornerback behind Denzel Ward and Tyson Campbell.
Now the depth chart is under real pressure. Cleveland was already thin at corner, and Coats’ injury comes right after the team lost starting defensive end Alex Wright to a season-ending injury. The defense has already been dealing with enough attrition that another setback in the secondary could sting badly.
Letting Martin Emerson Jr. walk now looks like a costly move. Even after a down year in 2024, he had shown enough before the training camp injury that wiped out all of 2025 to merit at least a short-term look.
If Coats is sidelined, the Browns’ most likely options to fill that role on the 53-man roster appear to be D’Angelo Ross and Tre Avery. Myles Harden is expected to handle the slot, while rookie Emmanuel McNeil-Warren could also factor in as a third safety.
There’s still plenty of reason to believe the defense can hold its own. Mike Rutenberg’s group has been flying around, forcing turnovers and getting into the backfield since spring workouts began. But the margin for error is getting tighter.
For now, the hope is that Coats’ ankle issue is only a scare. Even so, Andrew Berry should be working the phones and scanning the waiver wire for more help.
